Password strength depends on symbol set and length (number of characters)

Increasing the number of possible symbols from which random passwords are chosen will increase the strength of generated passwords of any given length. For this reason, it is recommended to use passwords that are based on all possible keys available: including the simbols, numerals, upper and lower case letters.

The recommended length for passwords using the complete character set is 10 characters, for a password entropy value of 64 bits (see in the FAQs section the article from Wikipedia about password strength). The equivalent number of lower case characters that would give the same protection is 14 characters.

Assuming that the password is selected as above, this password will be "crackable" by brute force in:

  1. assuming that one user can check 10 passwords per second, it would take 73 years for him to crack the password.
  2. assuming that an organization with a budget of about $1 billion can check 10 billion passwords per second, it would take 13 years for this password to be cracked by brute force, using this level of computing power.
